Do I need to be looking for a job to sign up for hookhead.com?
Some people have been asking us whether you need to be actively looking for a job to sign up for the free services on hookhead.com.
We actively welcome new registrations from all IT professionals whether they are looking for a job or not. One of the features provided by Hook Head is a build-n-host service for CV's, but this is optional and of course you can choose not to use this feature if you so desire.
There are many aspects to the IT Community which we have built, including the forums and other free tools e.g. Calendar, Notes, To-do lists, Network Drive and the Virtual Accountant, an online accounting systems for IT Contractors.
If you are interested in checking out the services, please feel free to REGISTER HERE

Re: Tax Calculator net total?
Hi,
As far a I can see the Net value is correct. If you are looking at the monthy view, please note that the "Health & Levies" is a sum of the fields Health Insurance, Income Levy and PRSI, so the Net figure is Gross - Tax - Health & Levies.
If you have a specific example which you think is incorrect, can you please forward the link to me at administrator@hookhead.com
Regards, Mark

Late payment of Invoices
We've been dealing with a "special needs" customer lately who feels that it is ok to delay payment on invoices for up to 6 months after they are due. This kind of 1950's style "horse-trading" is completely out of order in our opinion. When we decided that we --really wanted-- to get paid for our services, we had to threaten legal action and then they finally sat up an took notice. Of course then they decided to take the moral high ground and we became the bad bad guys - go figure!? - For anyone else out there who feels that getting paid for services rendered is problematic, We'd like to suggest you take a look at the following artiicle.
http://www.entemp.ie/enterprise/smes/latepay.htm
This article gives a good overview of how to deal with late payments. It's particularly good if you don't care about losing your customer's business (tough decision, I know) . However, interestingly, You can charge ...

Re: Time Zone in Portugal
| | I recently found out that Portugal is in the same time zone as Ireland, which I believe makes it the only Country in mainland Europe in GMT.
I was talking to my brother-in-law about it. He happens to be Spanish and he said that he has a friend who lived in Spain and commutted to Portugal every morning. He said that the funniest thing about the commute was that he could leave home at 9:30am and still get to work for 9:00am! - my kind of commute |
Must be a bitch of a commute in the afternoon though

Re: SOA - Something Old, Something New...?
Hello Hugh,
Seems to me that there is very little ingenuity out there with any of the new technologies. SOA for me is just a glorified CORBA with XML instead of IIOP, albeit with a few more bells and whistles.
What I''ve noticed over the years is that some technologies (e.g. CORBA) evolve and as a result additional features need to be bolted on to the side over time. This results in an ugly, ill-conceivedd architecture, lacking elegance and not surprisingly younger engineers tend to shy away from it.
What happens next is that someone comes along and thinks the architecture is too complex and they think that they can do it better and simpler. It's human nature I guess to simplify, but simplification also tends to sacrifice the devil in the detail. Over time, the short-comings of the new simpler architecture tend to come to light, modifications are made to the specification, resulting in an ugly "scar" on the original "elegant" arcitecture and the whole ...

Re: CV Writing Services / Templates
Hi,
I don't know much about this service, but if you ask me the best thing you can do when applying for a job is to have an effective covering letter. In my experience employers skim a CV in 30 seconds or less the first time they read your CV and dismiss it very quickly if it doesn't catch their eye. However, a covering letter is more personal and employers form an impression of you before getting to your CV, and if done correctly will help you make an good impression before they even see your CV.
